RECYCLING

You are the Difference - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Why should I recycle when it's easier to throw it out?

There are several reasons why recycling is better than throwing out. First of all, it's not as hard to recycle as you think.  Let's say you were at your kitchen table and you just finished a can of soda.  Your trash can is probably about as far away from you as your recycling bin (ours is in the garage; yours might be next to the trash can). It's not really any extra work to wash out the can and put it in your bin.  And besides, it's a good thing for our earth if you do that!  Recycling saves money, something which we all value ($'s)!

It's a lot cheaper to use existing materials by melting them down than to go out and find new ones. For example, by recycling that soda can earlier, you saved enough energy to run a TV for three hours straight!  So recycling aluminum saves aluminum and energy too!  Another reason to recycle is that is saves our natural resources. If we can pick up the pace and recycle more, there will be more resources for the future.

Lakeland's “Get Caught Recycling” program is to encourage increased recycling. “Get Caught Recycling” rewards residents who have recyclables out for curbside pickup on their collection day.  It truly “pays” for several Lakeland residents to recycle! Thank you to all our award winners for their dedication to recycling.

Household addresses are selected in a random drawing. A City representative checks the bins at the houses in the order of the draw.  Four households each month that have at least three different types of recycle material receive $50.  The winners "caught recycling" are invited to the Lakeland Board of Commissioners meeting the following month for recognition by the Board, and to receive their checks. Items that can be recycled and qualify for the contest are glass, metal cans, aluminum cans, plastics (remove caps and leave labels attached), newspapers, and cardboard boxes broken down to fit inside the recycle bin.

LAKELAND AREA CRIME REPORT

There were 13 reported cases of theft from a Motor Vehicle this past week. Thieves are stealing GPS systems, iPods, laptops, jewelry, money, CDs, stereo equipment, clothes, credit cards and gifts.

Each year, more than $1 billion in personal items and accessories are estimated to be stolen from vehicles in more than 2 million thefts. "If you leave valuable possessions visible in your car then you're leaving bait for thieves." With some common sense preventative measures, you can reduce the chances your vehicle will be a target.

Lock your doors, remove the keys and park in a well-lit public area. Many vehicle break-ins are from unlocked cars. Avoid parking in areas which conceal your vehicle.

Hide valuables. Don’t leave anything of value in view. Completely remove your GPS system and its windshield mount, iPod, packages and other valuables from the car. Even items stored in the trunk aren’t safe from thieves. Customized audio components make a car more attractive to thieves because it is easier for them to remove the system.

Completely close windows and sunroofs. In addition to leaving an easy entrance for thieves, open windows will disable the pressure sensor in some car alarms, leaving the vehicle more vulnerable to break-in and potentially giving thieves more time before the alarm sounds.
